Asif Ekbal is faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Patna. Prior to joining IIT Patna, he spent nearly two years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Heidelberg University, Germany, and the University of Trento, Italy. He has been actively pursuing research in Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Applied Machine Learning for over two decades and has made significant contributions to these areas. Dr. Ekbal has authored approximately 280+ research papers in leading international conferences and journals. He has been involved in several sponsored research projects funded by both industry and government agencies, including Elsevier, Accenture, ezDI, LG, Skymap, Samsung, and Flipkart, as well as government bodies such as MeitY, Government of India; IMPRINT, Government of India; and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India. He has served in various leadership and reviewing roles for premier conferences, including Area Chair, Senior Program Committee Member, and Program Committee Member for venues such as AAAI, IJCAI, ACL, EMNLP, EACL, and HLT/NAACL. He has also been an Organizing Co-Chair for the reputed international conferences, such as IJCNLP–AACL 2025 and ICONIP 2022. Dr. Ekbal currently serves as an Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Asian and Low-Resource Language Information Processing (ACM TALLIP) and Natural Language Processing (Cambridge University Press); Editorial Board Member of Computer Speech & Language (Elsevier); Academic Editor, PLOS ONE; Action Editor, Neural Networks (Elsevier). Previously, he has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems (Springer), Sādhanā (Springer), and Machine Translation (Springer). He is the Secretary of the NLP Association of India and a Member of the AI Standardization Committee, Government of India. His research excellence has been recognized with prestigious awards and fellowships, including the Best Innovative Project Award from the Indian National Academy of Engineering (2000), the JSPS Invitation Fellowship from the Government of Japan (2018), and the Visvesvaraya Young Faculty Research Fellowship Award from the Government of India (2018).
